As any South Park bowler will tell you, Thursday nights game is a bigger derby than the Man City V Man Utd game tomorrow.
South Park Vets are a team full of ex South Park bowlers and their is no love lost between the 2 teams. Its a game that could be friendly, could be exciting – however nothing other than a win will be good enough.
Lets all look forward to it, using our old mats and jacks etc – we look forward to the away tie to them where there will be lavish new mats and jacks and will feel more like royalty…………….
An closely contested game this afternoon ended badly. Over the 4 rinks there was promise as they went into an early lead.
Barry Hopkins rink was winning comfortably at the midway stage, Sandra Hopkins and Jane Pattisons rinks were still in the balance.
Unfortunately Sandra didnt manage to be the winning rink this week and with a large turnover of shots against the last few ends the long game which looked secure also disintegrated.
On a lighter note though we are very happy to again field a full team and with about half of the team very inexperienced this wasnt the worst result ever seen.
A good result this evening as our team demolished Woodland in the Sherwood League opening fixture. All rinks skipped by the Hopkins family won comfortably.
Albeit Woodland are probably the leagues weakest team a clean sheet in the 1st match is alway welcome.
Despite winning the league 2 seasons ago the team found it difficuly last season to match expectations and only just survived relegation. As it happens no one went down as the league amalgamated into one Division only. As always the favourites for the league are Cummins but South Park and the JUC are always a threat and if either find the necessary consistency they can push all the way to the very end.
Despite the North East being filled with hail and storms the game was completed almost all in the sunshine.
The result was not the best but on a positive note a full team was fielded and we were unlucky not to scrape 4 points.
Our only winning rink was Sandra Hopkins, Sam Pattison and Daniel Bailey – They won by 3 shots in a very pleasing encounter where they all played well but Sam played a stormer and made the difference in the game.
The rink skipped by Barry Hopkins was very unlucky to lose by one shot despite leading with 2 ends to play and despite losing substantially the rink Skipped by Jane Pattison was a close encounter in the 1st half.
The less said about the rink skipped by Scott Morland the better…………………
An enjoyable day with good hospitality but next week there is much room for improvement in the performance.
Its the opening game of the season with a tricky away tie to Witton Gilbert – a place we rarely win but do pick up valuable away points.
Gilbert are only just relegated from Division 2 which they found far too tough in their 1st season.
South Park are expecting to play a below strength team and are struggling to make the 12, however at this stage of the season it is a lottery and the stronger and the more willing usually prevail.
The team meet up at 1.30 to travel to the game in the hope it isnt a washout – although a share of the spoils wouldnt be the worst result for us we would rather play for our points, we are no Blackhall!
